As you probably already know, the state of Texas passed legislation effective September 1, 2009 that now requires adults aged 18-24 that are attempting to get their drivers license must take a TEA Approved Adult Driving Course. This only applies if you are receiving your driver’s license for the first time or if you are moving to Texas with an expired out-of-state license. With that being said, if you have a valid out-of-state license or you are getting your Texas license again, you won’t be required to take adult drivers ed.
If you find that you have to take a TEA approved adult driving course there are many options for completion. The 2 Texas approved delivery methods are online and classroom. For the classroom courses there are well over 100 approved locations that teach Texas adult drivers ed at a physical location. (Complete list of TEA approved adult driving courses) Taking a course in a classroom is pretty much just how it seems. You will go to a physical location and sit in a classroom for 6 hours while the instructor covers all state required material. There will be breaks during the course and upon completion of the course you will take a final exam to make sure that you fully understand the material covered during the class. Although this option works for many people some prefer the flexibility and convenience of an online course.
Taking a TEA-approved adult driving course online gives you the option to complete the course at your own pace. Although the course is still required to take 6 hours to complete and does have a final exam upon completion you are allowed the flexibility to complete the course on your own schedule for only $65.00. Once you pass the 6 hour adult drivers Ed course you automatically pass your written DPS exam. When you’re done we will send you a certificate of completion that states you pass your DPS written exam. When your certificate arrives take into your local DPS to get your license. It is important to note that if you do not currently have a license you will be required to take a behind-the-wheel driving exam at your local DPS Office.
